Winter At-Home Car Washing Tips

Posted by Wipe Me Down on January 3, 2011 at 12:09 PM

"Keeping your vehicle clean by frequenting a professional car wash every 10 days is one of the best defenses in protecting its finish," said Mark Thorsby, ICA executive director

This is especially true during the winter months where we encounter snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, sand and salt.  Working in conjunction with each other, these factors have the potential to wreak havoc on your vehicle's finish.  Its always easiest and best to have your vehicle professionally cleaned.  However, here are a few tips if your only recourse is to do it youself:

  • Wear a pair of waterproof gloves.
  • With a high pressure nozzle on your water hose, spray your vehicle down moving from top to bottom.
  • Be sure to get as much mud and dirt from beneath the wheel wells, under the bumpers, behind the fenders and in any other areas prone to salty splashes.
  • Use a tire brush and mild degreaser for tires, rims and wheel wells.  Rinse before moving on to your vehicle's body.
  • Follow with a warm, bubbly scrub down, using a wash mitt and soap made especially for car washing. Wash your vehicle in sections, again from top to bottom.
  • Don't neglect to scrub all the rubber, trim, outside door seals, tires, and the wheel covers.
  • Rinse thoroughly, making sure to remove all traces of soap.

Incorporating these tips into your normal at-home car wash routine will be a great help to your vehicle in between professional visits.
